Book Review: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

If I had been reviewing books in order of greatest to least, this might have been closer to the top. But I was trying to make the reviews vary in topic, so here is Pride and Prejudice at last! This is one of those books that everyone has heard of, but not everyone knows. I know some people who, although they do not know anything about the book, write it off as a silly love story. What is ironic about that view is that they are wrongly PREJUDICED against it! But, just like Lizzy with Darcy, if the reader will give Pride and Prejudice a chance, it will prove to be a gold mine! While containing all the beautiful characteristics of classic literature (depth of plot, large vocabulary, character development, etc), it is not hard to get into. When the opening assumption reads: "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a large fortune must also be in want of a wife...", the book quickly gains the reader's attention! I love that, besides the main plot, there are several little plots, romances, and conflicts, and so many widely different characters!

Pride and Prejudice is set in 19th century England. It is about a middle-class family of five daughters, who need to marry before their estate is entailed to a relative. Enter a matchmaking mother, an arrogant rich guy, a nice but not as rich guy, a ridiculous cousin, a crook, and so many other unique characters who each have their own motives! And fasten your seat belt :) you'll be crying one minute, laughing the next, mentally hitting people, cringing, etc. But it's everyone's favorite book, including mine, so stop judging it with unfounded prejudice, and see for yourself if it's as good as everyone says!

God bless you! Merry Christmas! Veronica
